About the Project

The Alexander Name Study project serves as a collaborative platform to collect information on the Alexander name. The hope is that other researchers like you will join the study to help make it a valuable reference point for other genealogists who are researching or have an interest in the Alexander name.

As a One Name Study, this project is not limited to persons who are related biologically. Individual team studies can be used to branch out the research into specific methods and areas of interest, such as geographically (England Alexander), by time period (18th Century Alexanders), or by topic (Alexander DNA, Alexander Occupations, Alexander Statistics). These studies may also include a number of family branches which have no immediate link with each other. Some researchers may even be motivated to go beyond the profile identification and research stage to compile fully sourced, single-family histories of some of the families they discover through this name study project.

Also see the related surnames and surname variants.

Why is there no coordinator and no teams for this Name Study?
Hi Heather,

Unfortunately, this name study will be inactive until a new coordinator volunteers to take it on. For further details of the ONS Project, please see: https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Project:One_Name_Studies.

My name is Annie Alexander and I am interested in this project of finding out more about the Alexanders.

My father William John Alexander born 1920 died in 2014, His father also Wm John born in April 1896 died in 1949 he had one sister Mary who did not marry, His father Robert born in 1874, then his father John Alexander traced his birth year to 1851 came from Northern Ireland settled and married Susanna Cleland in Bridgeton, Glasgow was widowed at a young age. This is where I have hit a brick wall. My great Aunt Mary said the family were of Dutch descent and came over to Ireland with William of Orange and then came to settle in Lanarkshire. My father said the name Alexander is part of the clan McAllister

I'd love to join the Alexander project. My one brick wall is Ephraim Alexander of Ohio. He married Catherine Barnett and had one child I am aware of, Ephraim K Alexander b 1843. It appears Ephraim Sr passed by 1848 as Catherine married John Sanders and later had another child with John. Anyone who has Alexanders living in Ohio please contact me.

I am descended from Alexanders who according to family lore, settled in Cecil Co, MD (while others went to nearby PA), then went to NC, then GA, then some went to AL and some went to FL (all by 1850). I have documented Asa Castellow (or Castellaw) Alexander, who was born in Wilkes Co. in 1760 and died in Dale Co, AL in 1834; he married Faitha Wooten, and they had several children including Albert James Alexander (often described as James Albert), b 1801 loc unk, d. TX (?) date unk, wife's name unk, but they had several children including Columbus Rutherford Alexander, (1822-1904), a maternal great grandfather, who was born in Jones Co, GA, and had moved to FL by 1850.

I am requesting to join the Alexander Project. My maternal line included Alexanders from Gaston and Mecklenburg Counties in North Carolina. I have researched this family with some success and some brick walls. I continue to research to break down those brick walls.

I am interested in joining this Alexander Name Study. My mother and grandfather were Alexanders who lived in North Carolina. There are many Alexander families in North Carolina which often makes the research challenging. My grandfather was Franklin Cleveland Alexander and according to some records, he was born in Monroe, Union, North Carolina. I am interested in finding his parents and connecting this family

Since this is the Alexander Name Study, I removed the "Graham" and "Tidwell" surname tags from the page.
I would like to join the Alexander project. Please let me know how to do that. Thank you, Linda Alexander
